Today, we’re going to be talking about a book with a rather unique title. The Devil, The Witch and the Whore by Amy Cross. However, I didn’t pick it because of its rather unconventional title, which I love, by the way. I picked it because of something unique inside. Stay tuned and you’ll see what I mean.
Ok, I’m going to start by making you aware of a few things about this book. Thing one. It’s part of a series, but this analysis is just about the first book.
Thing two. Amy Cross is a great writer, but she writes gore, and lots of it. In fact, her work is labeled as ‘extreme horror’, so if you don’t like normal horror, I guarantee you’re not going to like this. However, this particular one is so different, I just had to talk about it.
I’m going to be talking about extreme things, but I’m not going to be showing anything extreme, so you don’t need to leave. The fact that it’s extreme isn’t what makes this book great. This book contains a deal-making devil, a powerful but imprisoned witch, an ancient prophecy, a chosen one who is also a whore, which on a fascinating twist on most prophecies who only want virgins, a serial killer and a cop.
So far it sounds pretty standard. That is until you start reading it and meet the character of Liam Cane, the serial killer.
Liam’s part of the story is told from his point of view, and when he talks, you see a seriously disturbed man. As you get to know him, you realize that he believes he’s in a world populated by demons. He even works for one. Liam often talks about the ‘glitter in their eyes’. They, being the demon.
He is also searching for a magic artifact that will save the world.
An artifact that is hidden in the body of the chosen one. Of course, Liam has no idea who the chosen one is, so he just grabs women at random and tears them apart looking for it. He doesn’t feel bad about it because he doesn’t believe they are women, he thinks they are demons inhabiting the women’s body.
By killing her in a ritualistic way, he thinks he’s setting her soul free.
Now, if you’re a little chilled by Liam’s actions, don’t worry. That’s normal.
However, Cross does what few others dare to do. She takes us inside the head of a deeply disturbed man who is still able to function in the everyday world. She shows us that we can never really know what’s going on inside another person’s head and that for all the dancing around of magic, people like Liam are the ones we should fear.
It’s definitely worth a read if you want to see how a truly violently disturbed person acts.
