So you want to write your life story.
But what kind of life story do you want to write?
Something else?
So let's take a look at the different options for writing your life story.
The most common phrase, and often used interchangeably with ‘memoir' it's actually anything but generic.
A Biography is used to describe a life story from childhood to current stage adulthood. A Book like They are usually the best choice for people who are already famous. Once you become famous, your fans want to know EVERYTHING about you and will happily buy your childhood memories in bigroaphy form.
☀️Michelle Obama's ‘Becoming’ is a biography.☀️
The next type of life story is a better choice for people who are up-and-comers; the memoir. Rather than chronicling an entire life, it covers the most trumloutus period in this person’s history. The period where their entire life changed forever. It reads more like a novel like narrative and is more thrilling for readers.
☀️Maybe You Should Talk Someone by Lori Gottlieb is a humorous example of a memoir☀️
This is a book that reads either like biography or memoir and is based on real life, but has certain parts exaggerated or changed for effect. Think of these types of narratives as the ‘movie version’ of ‘based on a true story’.
☀️A Million Little Pieces by James Frey is a great example of a fictional life story. ☀️
This one is technically not a life story book, but it has so many life story elements it’s worth mentioning. This type of book combines life stories with spelled out and interpreted life lessons to elevate the reader's consciousness. It’s actually a more direct way of communicating with your reader, and a better way to break down hard to understand concepts.
☀️Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki is such a book. ☀️
Each of these books accomplish different things for their very different audiences. Neither are right or wrong, but could be right or wrong for your book.
New writers think there is only one way to write a life story and that’s incorrect. There are many ways to write one depending on the type of life story you want to write and who you want it to reach.
The question is which one do YOU want to write?
