Let me know where to send it...
If your novel fizzled out in the middle, like many do, or even if you’ve made it all the way to the end but the book doesn’t feel right, there’s a reason this happened.
All novels are made up of three pillars;
✅ Characters.
✅ Theme.
✅ And Plot.
If you don’t have all three of them solid before you start writing, you either get a book that fizzles out in the middle, or a book that’s finished, but feels lifeless. And not only do you need all three of these things, you need them in this exact order.
Now, that’s not to say you need to know EVERYTHING about your book before you start writing it. Where’s the fun in that?
But you need to know at least half.
It all starts with characters. As you get to know them better, you’ll build in more backstory, more reactions, more quirks, but you have to know them well enough to know how they’ll react in any situation you throw at them.
THIS is what readers remember and this is what can carry your book even if the other two can’t.
The second part is ‘Theme’. Theme is partially about genre, and partially about the book’s underlying message. Theme’s don’t have to be highbrow or be about injustice to work.
The theme of every romance ever written is ‘Love Conquers All.’
The theme of nearly every classic horror is ‘This Is A Bad Idea’
The theme of nearly every dystopia is ‘The World Is Broken; We Have to Break It Some More To Fix It.’
You get the idea.
Not knowing your theme from the start gets the readers confused. And it gets you confused too.
A love interest in a horror movie acts differently than a love interest in a romance.
At least, I hope they do.
And FINALLY, there’s plot. You likely started with basic plot, but you can’t expand on it until you have the other two parts in place.
Once you do, you’ll be an unstoppable writer.
Writing a great book readers will love all boils down to Characters, Theme and Plot. Get that right and writing books becomes easy and fun.
And of the three, Characters are the most important.
