Blending Two Separate Books Into One Narrative

Two books in a series that are radically different

The other day while reading, I encountered something truly rare; a duology .

A duology is a book series made up of only two books.

These two books, in particular, are Loch Ness Revenge and Savage Jungle by Hunter Shea. And yes, this contains spoilers.

Loch Ness Revenge revolves around a brother and sister who are determined to bring Nessie down. They want revenge because a group of Nessies killed their parents when the pair was still small.

The brother brings along a new friend. A German man named Heinrick who promised to help them bring down the Nessies if they’d help him bring down a cryptid he wants revenge on; the Orang Pendeks, basically Indonesia’s version of bigfoot.

So by the end of the book, the Nessies are dead and the trio barely makes it out alive. Once they start to catch their breath, Heinrick reminds them that he helped them with their Nessie problem, now they have to help him with the Orang Pendeks.

End of book one.

The second book is all about the trio trying to bring down the Orang Pendeks. Only this time had different results.

The brilliance of these books is that they work well as both a stand alone or a pair.

But once you read book one about the sibling’s revenge, you have to read the next one to see how Heinrick’s story plays out.

By structuring the books this way, Shea avoided my pet peeve, the premature ending.

To see a two part story done right, with no premature ending, check out this duology.
