When a reader buys your book, they’re investing in it. Not just their time, but their money and their belief that your book is going to make them happy. It’s going to transport them to a world that they’re going to fall in love with.
And few people do this better than Devon and Lauren Royal. They write Romance books.
Specifically, I’m talking about their book series, The Regency Chase Brides. This is a romance set in the regency era, and they do something few other books do successfully.
How?
With recipes.
These recipes are not just from the regency time period, the treats they make are an integral part of the story.
There are three ways the recipes are important.
The first way is because of the dates and names. Each date and name refers to a character you’ve grown familiar with in another book. By this time in history, those characters would be long dead, yet their memories live on not only in our memories and the memories of their descendants but also in the recipes.
The second way the recipes contribute to the book is in the way they’re written. You’ll notice a few measurements are given, but not that many. It’s like a ‘handful of flour’ This was common for recipes of the period. However, they are given so much detail, it’s tempting to try some of these recipes. If you know what you’re doing in the kitchen, then you’re likely to create something really good.
For example, almond macaroons are to make someone feel amorous, lemon slices are for cooling affections, there are also treats for apologies and treats for sympathy, and even treats for melancholy.
Whenever a woman in the story made the sweets, it was always with a purpose in mind. She’d watch them get eaten and wait for the desired results. Sometimes they worked, and sometimes they didn’t, which is just how it goes with treats.
But if you took the treats out of the story, it wouldn't’ be as interesting or as fun.
Plus, as I already said, you can make the treats and try them for yourself.
So if you want to see a masterful use of recipes incorporated into a story, read the Chase Regency Brides series by Lauren and Devon Royal.
