Let me know where to send it...
The woman in question was Mary Wollstonecraft.
The book was called A Vindication For The Rights Of Women.
It had one simple premise: ‘Women are not inferior by nature, but rather are made inferior by being denied essential tools like education’.
When the book came out, it created quite a stir. Up until this point, much of the western world believed women incapable of rational thought (which is why they were considered property under the law.) Even people who should have known better, such as Darwin himself believe women were inferior by biology, and not by the many laws that kept opportunities from them.
Once this genie was out of the bottle so to speak, it could not be stuffed back in. Societal bonds that kept women as slaves started to weaken, spurred to action not only by the women themselves, but also from the fathers, husbands, and brothers who wanted better for the women they loved.
It took several hundred years before women were granted the right to vote, and likely several hundred more before true equality is reached.
Change takes time, but it is achievable. And when it is finally achieved, it will be in part because of that book.
How will your book change the world?
